Sumerian Writing and Grids Influence

Early Sumerians used Cuneiform to form a complex reading and writing systems that often involved people learning the craft for life, starting at 10. Often working sun up to sun down. Cuneiform was the moment a writing system was created that didn’t consist of only pictographs. This allowed for the possibility of conveying complexity in simplied terms through character reduction. They also introduced us to the idea of grids to separate items. Grids allow us to communicate far more effectively by being easier to understand by separating items.

Egyptians continued the tradition of using a grid system. Important names were read on cartouches that were deciphered through the Rosetta Stone. Today grids are used for laying out newspapers, Websites, Applications, Flyers, Posters, etc.
